Cordova Airport Rehabilitation and Fencing

Cordova Airport Fence Installation Project

Purpose and Need

The purpose of the proposed fencing project is to decrease wildlife hazards, reduce the chances of unauthorized access by vehicles or pedestrians, and to meet 49 CFR Part 1542 transportation security requirements. The project is needed as the airport experiences frequent wildlife incursions on operational surfaces because the airport perimeter is not secure with up to 95 large animal hazing incidents annually.

Project Description

  • The proposed project is anticipated to include:
  • Construction of a new perimeter fence
  • Construction of a 25-foot-wide gravel embankment to serve as fence foundation and maintenance road
  • Removal, replacement, or upgrading of existing culverts
  • Additional culverts on stream segments to maintain stream connectivity

Material Sites and Staging Areas

Both projects will be staged on airport property on previously developed or disturbed areas. Material for both projects is anticipated to be sourced from existing, permitted material sites and would be included in the environmental review of the project:

  • Existing material site (Sheridan Glacier) on airport property may be expanded to obtain sufficient material for the project.
  • Existing material site (Flag Point) approximately 13 miles east on land owned by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources may be used to obtain sufficient material for the project. Expansion of the material site is not anticipated.
